Internal Water Leak Detection Service

For indoor plumbing, the tracer gas is introduced into the pipe work within your property. The gas passes through hidden leaks behind walls, under floors, or in ceilings. Handheld gas analysers are then used to detect the escaping gas, pinpointing the exact leak location with high precision. This method is particularly useful for locating leaks in hard-to-reach areas, such as concealed pipes or tight spaces, without the need for invasive drilling or demolition.

For this internal leak detection service provided by The Leak Detectors, we were detecting a leak which was heard from below the kitchen sink but there was no visible leak found or water damage seen on the walls or floor of the property.

how to find internal leaks

We tested the pressure from the incoming water main supply. The pressure dropped over a period of 1 minute, indicating that there was a leak somewhere in the property.

After testing to make sure there was a leak, we inserted tracer gas into the incoming water mains supply from the internal stop tap below the sink. There was 800 to 900 ppm of tracer gas detected being released from the floor in the utility room opposite the kitchen sink.

The leak could be heard by the acoustic microphone underneath the flooring in the utility room.

To access the leak, we had to cut a small section of the timber floor boards in the corner of the utility room. A small area of the concrete was broken away to be able to find the leak on a 15mm copper pipe which led to the internal stop tap.

To repair the leak, we installed a new section of 15mm copper pipe, fitting it from the corner of the utility room through to the stop tap on the other side of the wall.

After we had fixed the leak, the water was turned back on and no noise was heard, concluding that we had found and repaired the leak.
